Lucille Burbank Barbee, 80, Fernandina Beach, wife of William Ray Barbee, Sr. for over 57 years, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2002, at Baptist Medical Center-Nassau. A native of Fernandina Beach, she was the daughter of the late William Hunter Burbank and Effie Peterson Burbank, and resided in Jesup, Georgia for 26 years, before returning to Fernandina Beach in 1980. Mrs. Barbee was formerly the Office Manager for Mr. Ira Hardee, who owned and operated Standard Hardware Company which later became Standard Marine. While in Jesup, she worked for an attorney, Alvin Leaphart, Esq., and a surgeon, Dr. Meadows. Mrs. Barbee was formerly a member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Jesup, where she was a member of, and served as president of the Altar Guild. She was now a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach. Mrs. Barbee was a devout Episcopalian, enjoyed gardening & cooking, and she will be fondly remembered as the ultimate caregiver, caring for her husband and mother for many years, with a warm smile for everyone.
Survivors, besides her husband, include: a son, William Ray Barbee, Jr. and grandson, William Ray Barbee III, both of Jacksonville; two sisters, Dorothy (Charles) Jones, Fernandina Beach and Charlene (Floyd) Lohman, Yulee; a brother-in-law, John " Sonny" Pappas, Fernandina Beach; and many nieces & nephews. Funeral Services will be held Monday, July 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at St. Peters Episcopal Church, with Reverend Father George D. Young, III, Rector, officiating. Interment will follow in St. Peters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church, Fernandina Beach. Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
