CLINTON, Iowa — Lester C. Humphreys, 77, of Clinton, died Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Crestridge Nursing Home, Maquoketa, Iowa.
Burial in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Lester Calvin Humphreys was born on October 4, 1934, in Buena Vista, Virginia, the son of Robert and Pauline (Campbell) Humphreys.
In 1952 he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates and played professional baseball for two years, first in Batavia, New York, then in Clinton. After leaving baseball on June 10, 1955, he married the love of his life Ilean Ryner. They were happily married for 55 years until her passing on August 1, 2010. He was employed at Clinton Corn Processing/ADM until retiring in 1996.
His spare time was spent playing softball, umpiring high school baseball and refereeing high school basketball, attending every possible event involving his children or grandchildren, or traveling with his wife and his brother-in-law and wife, Gail and Diana Ryner. Never losing the love of the game of baseball he and Ilean would often be seen taking in games at Riverview Stadium. He served on the Clinton Baseball Board of directors for many years.
He is survived by three daughters, Lynn (Eric) Johnson of Davenport, Lorene Chevrier of Aiken, South Carolina, and Lisa (Mike) Heusinkveld of Clinton; six grandchildren, Adam, Aaron, Meredith, Aubrey, Ethan and Hannah; one brother, Robert (Kay) Humphreys of Tampa, Florida; his brother-in-law, Gail (Diana) Ryner of Clinton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, and one sister.
