Jesse Smith was the youngest child of Mary Shimer Smith and Enoch M. Smith. Jesse was born in Springfield, Illinois, lived on Kansas and came west to Snohomish, WA before the age of 15 years. Jesse met and married Mabel Amanda Cedergreen at the age of 25 years. Jesse worked in the lumber industry in Snohomish County and at one time was the head sawyer at the B, B & R Lumber Mill in Snohomish. Jesse moved on to dairy farming, an occupation he never really enjoyed. He kept his hand in the mill business by cutting logs in his own small mill on his property along the west Snoqualmie River Road. Jesse eventually dropped the "e" on his first name and was also addressed as "Cap" because of the red cap he wore as he moved about his farm. Jess and Mabel were married for 65 years before his death, he was a well loved father and grandfather.
