Bertha was one of the eight children born to Charles Nelson Stayton and Elva Victoria Large, who married on 12 Apr 1902 in Fulton Co., Indiana. Five-year-old Bertha first appeared with her family on the 1910 Census, living in Davis, Starke Co., Indiana, where her father was working for the railroad. Elva reported that she had had four children but that only three were still living. The child that died was most likely born sometime between 1903 and 1904 and would have been the couple's first child. Bertha had arrived in 1904, Charles Jr. in 1907, and Walter in 1909.

By the 1920 Census, Charley and Elva had moved the family to Union Township (today the Culver area), Marshall County, where Charley was having a go at farming. The couple appeared to have lost son Walter before that census. Three other children had joined the family-Victoria M. in 1911, Willard R. in 1914, and Grace S. in 1917. Elva must have been pregnant with daughter Edith M., who appeared with the family on the 1930 Census, aged 11.

Bertha left her family on 5 Sep 1922 at age 18, to marry Sylvester Irven Aman. Son Charles Irwin arrived the day after Christmas later that same year. He was joined by brother John Edward in 1923, sister Virginia in 1924, sister Evelyn Viola in 1925, and sister Irma Ruth May in 1927.

Tragedy struck on 5 Dec 1927, when Bertha and two-year-old daughter Evelyn both died as the result of burns they received in a kitchen fire. (See attached account of accident.)

After Bertha and Evelyn's death, Bertha and Sylvester's other four children went to live with Betha's mother and father. I found them on the 1930 Census, in Union Township, where Charley was a teamster, doing odd jobs to support his wife, three children still at home, and four grandchildren.

Bertha's husband Sylvester married Hazel Lara Barnett on 12 Apr 1934. According to his 1941 WWII draft card, they were living in Plymouth, Marshall, Indiana, and Sylvester was working for Kingsbury in LaPorte, Indiana. They appear to have had a daughter together.

In 1940, three of Bertha's children were still living with their grandparents. Charles was 17, John was 16, and Irma was 13. Grandfather Charley, aged 57, was busy farming. In 1940, Betha's other child, daughter Virgina, was living with her aunt Victoria, Bertha's sister, and Victoria's husband Robert Lee Wynn and their three children-Nelson Lee, aged 10, Anne, aged 8, and Everett, aged 5.
