US Congressman. Born in Bethel, Ohio, he was in the printing trade when he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced to practice law in Batavia, Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives (1840-42), presidential elector on the Whig ticket in 1844 and clerk of the court of Clermont County, (1846-52). In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses, serving until 1869. After his term, he was appointed collector of internal revenue in Ohio and served until his death at age 60 in Batavia, Ohio.
