Baker, George M.

George M. Baker, one of the most widely known citizens of the county, died
Sunday morning at his residence in Somerset, following a long sickness of heart
disease. Late last fall he entered a Pittsburg hospital for treatment, but after
spending a few weeks under the care of a specialist he returned home, since when
his decline was rapid. Mr. Baker was born in Milford Township where he resided
until he came to Somerset about 20 years ago to accept the position of Deputy
Sheriff under his brother-in-law, Sheriff Edward Hoover. He served in the same
capacity under Sheriffs J. B. Saylor, W. C. Begley and Charles H. Weimer and was
only prevented by sickness from serving as a deputy under Lester G. Wagner,
present sheriff. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife and seven children, viz: Paul
of near Friedens; John of Johnstown; Mrs. Harry W. Boyts and Mrs. Samuel
Sumpstine of Somerset; Mrs. John Casler of Tyrone; Mrs. Leroy McClintock of
Pittsburg and Mrs. W. A. Prior of Atlantic City. The funeral took place Tuesday
afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. I. Hess Wagner, of Trinity Lutheran
Church. Interment was made in the Husband Cemetery.
