Mary Banks Matthews, age 89, beloved widow of Simeon Melton Matthews, died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the McLeod Hospice House. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Tuesday, November 22, at First Baptist Church, with burial following in Grove Hill Cemetery, directed by Belk Funeral Home.

Born July 7, 1922 in Darlington, she was the daughter of the late Monie E. Banks and the late Ellie Moody Banks Stokes. Mary attended St. John's High School and was later a member of the All-star girls softball team in the 1930's. She owned and operated Matthews Food Store along with her husband. During this time she was an excellent bowler, and had the trophies to prove it! Mrs. Matthews loved her Lord, her family and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Darlington, where she was a member of the Eloise Smyre Circle.

She is survived by her son, Richard M. Matthews of Atlanta, GA, her grandson, Jack Melton Matthews of Atlanta, her brother, James E. Banks of Florence, her uncle, Archie Moody of Darlington, many nieces, nephews and extended family. Also, her special niece and caregiver, Alexis Cromer Bryant and her special friend, Peggy Green.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Keith, Monie and Billy Banks and two sisters, Blanche Dickerson and Betty Payne

The family would like to express a special thanks to the "angels" at McLeod Hospice, including, but not limited to, Cora Lee Burr.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church on Tuesday.
