Educated at public and private schools (hon. Sc.D., Washington and Jefferson Coll., 1909); Naturalist U.S.S. Corwin, Arctic Expedition, 1885; resident naturalist, U.S.S. Albatross, deep-sea investigations in Atlantic and Pacific 1886-96. Belongs to the Century Club. Wrote many official documents on the fisheries, fur seal industries and deep-sea explorations.

Charles Haskins Townsend died on January 28,1944 in Miami, Dade Co., Florida. He was married to Ella Calista Bean and she is also buried in Unity Cemetery (Find A Grave Memorial# 8074021). They had no children. Ella Calista Bean was previously married to Harris Harding Fassett who died in 1909.
