Taken from the History of Readfield Maine:
The Lanes came to Readfield, Maine in 1788, they were neighbors of the Smiths and the Huttons. James Lane married Eunice Chase whom he met on a trip to Martha's Vineyard. An aura of romantic legend surrounds Eunice. She is said to have bought a certain kind of daisy to Readfield. She also had a way with growing things and she was an expert horsewoman. One day as she alighted from her horse, she struck a willow switch, which she had been using as a riding crop, into the ground and from it sprang a tree. Women of those days had to be good horsewomen if they wished to go very far at all, they also had to exert the independence which women so jealously guard today.
