Served during the Civil War with Co. K, 27th Indiana Infantry. He was wounded 16 MAY 1863 in VA. He was wounded again at Gettysburg, PA in the desperate charge his regiment made across Spangler's Meadow. He was severely wounded at Resaca, GA, taking a rifle ball to the right side of his chest while serving as the regimental color bearer. He had been color bearer at Antietam, as well. He mustered out of volunteer service on 6 OCT 1864.
