Mrs. CLARA HATHAWAY
NORTH BENNINGTON - This community lost one of its oldest and most respected citizens when Mrs. Clara B. Hathaway died Sunday morning at her home here. She was in her 94th year.
The former Clara Agnes Bottum was born Dec 30, 1870 in Wallomsac, N.Y., the daughter of the late Edward and Marietta (Cox) Bottum. She was a sister of the late Fred L. Bottum, Ernest F. Bottum and Mrs. Flora B. Howard.
Her education was received locally and she graduated from North Bennington High School, of which at the time of her death she was the oldest living graduate. She spent a number of years in the teaching profession, having started to teach school at the age of 16 in the rural Shaftsbury schools; she later taught in the Bennington Graded School. A number of older citizens in the area remember her fondly as a teacher who could maintain a gentle, but firm discipline even among students often bigger and sometimes nearly as old as she.
Her marriage to the late Albert S. Hathaway took place on Oct 18, 1893. They made their home on West Street and Mr. Hathaway operated a general store here at the time. He died in 1920.
The oldest member of the North Bennington Baptist Church, Mrs. Hathaway had given many years of devotion to her church and its work. She served as church clerk for 30 years and also taught a Sunday school class there for many years. She had been a member of the South side Circle of th church since its beginning.
Although, devoted to her home and family, Mrs. Hathaway always kept up her interest in the community and the world outside it. Frail health had kept her confined to her home in the past few years, but she continued to keep up her knowledge and interest in all phases of community life. Young people were always a source of joy to her and up until her death, she found great enjoyment in seeing her grandchildren and great grandchildren about her.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred B. Hathaway and Mrs. Grace Cherbonneau; two grandchildren, Donald Cherbonneau and Mrs. Frank (Dorothy) Hurley, and nine great grandchildren. Two nieces and four nephews also survive.
Funeral services will take place Tuesday at 2 pm at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 in the evening.
