Salt Lake Tribune, The (UT) - September 5, 2001. Obituary: Ruth Swindle Hammond, age 95, passed away in her home on September 2, 2001. Born September 15, 1905 in Monroe, Utah to Emma Warnock and Heber Swindle. In 1926, Ruth graduated from Dr. W. H. Grove's LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City as a Registered Nurse. Nursing was, from the beginning, one of her greatest loves; she was a nurse to the very end. She served as the Nurse in Charge at Moab hospital; as a Public Health Nurse in Grand and Sanpete Counties; as a private nurse in Salt Lake City; as a Head Nurse on '3C' at LDS Hospital; and as an Office Nurse for various Doctors in Salt Lake City. She leaves a great legacy of nursing behind her. Ruth married F. A. Hammond on April 23, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah and later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Her son Frank was born in 1928 and in 1949 her daughter Maureen was born. She had a great love of family, treasuring her children and family above all else. Ruth was a go-getter, there never was such an energetic woman. She was a great poet, always making up a verse about something, often sharing her verses with family members. Favorite family memories include Grandma Ruth's 'program' every Christmas, of which each member of her family was expected to be a part. It was always a good time at 'Grandma Ruth's house'. Everything Ruth did, she did with zeal. Her hobbies included fishing, genealogy, handiwork of all kinds, and gardening. Anything she did, hobbies, nursing, or family, she did with vigor. Ruth was always concerned about neighbors and friends, making sure that their needs were met before her own. Her service was felt throughout the community as she cared for fellow church members, neighbors, patients, and family. After retiring, Ruth also operated a Nursery School for 13 years. Ruth was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully for many years in MIA, Choir, Sunday School, Primary, and Relief Society.

Ruth leaves an incredible legacy of family members including: son Frank (Marilyn) Hammond and daughter Maureen (Ted) Schroeder and sisters Beth Sundstrom and Blanche Plummer, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; all of whom will dearly miss a wonderful grandmother.

Preceded in death by her husband F.A. Hammond in 1992, grandson Stephen Hammond, sister Elva Plummer, and brother Roscoe Swindle. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, Sept. 6th, at 12 noon in the Crystal Heights 1st Ward Chapel, 1970 E. Stratford Ave. (2560 South), where friends may call from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery.
