Beatrice (was my mother. Researched, written and photos provided by Vernon P. Casias) came from a family of early settlers in Southern Colorado. Her parents were Bentura (Buenaventura) Romero and Maria Estefanita Lopez who were living in Del Norte, Co. by 1881. Beatrice Romero and Pete Casias were married on 04-12-1915 in Del Norte. Pete was working in the mines in Creed, Co. and Beatrice would take the train regularly from Del Norte to Creed to visit. Many years after Pete passed away Beatrice married Mr. Higinio Esquibel. Being born in August her favorite flower was the sunflower. She was a life long resident of Del Norte and was well known in the community often called,"La Colorada," the,"Redhead." In later years she was affectionately referred to as, "Mom." Her house was never empty everyday friends and people young and old from all walks of life would stop by to visit. Beatrice had very few vices which were her flowers, coffee, reading True Confessions magazine and the magazine about Hollywood's latest gossip. She loved to cook and cooked on the same wood burning stove most of her life. All those years she lived in the same yellow house that used to be located on the right side of the road before you got to the football field. The neighborhood used to be called, "Sleepy Town," because the locals went to bed so early. In 1979 because of her age her son Vernon moved Beatrice and her brother Phil Romero to Arizona with him where she passed away. She was brought back to Del Norte where she was interred in the family plot next to her son Albert Casias. (
