Mrs. Mary Monroe Laid to Rest Wednesday.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary J. Monroe, who passed away at 12:30 a.m. Monday, May 26, at her home at 603 Wisconsin street after a months illness, were held Wednesday morning at the William Fawcett Funeral Home. The Rev. C. O. Newman and the Rev. Charles P. Knight were in charge of the services.

Casket bearers were, James M. Williams, Esley E. Elkins, Frank M. Greer, Earl Northrup, Dennis Fitsmorris and William E. Tolle. Interment was in the Neodesha Cemetery.

Out of town relatives attending the services were:
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Faye, Lions, Kansas; Mr. & Mrs. Merlin Charles, Wichita; Mr. & Mrs. Warren Billingslee and family, Marietta, Okla.; Mrs. Katherine Walker, Ft. Worth, Texas.

Out of town friends attending were: Mr. & Mrs Ralph Hoffer, Kansas City, Mo.; Mrs. Audrey Scholey, Toronto, Kan.; Mrs. C. L. Bartholomeu, Coffeyville; Mr. & Mrs. Lynn Lake, Wichita.

Mary Jane Stansbury was born, Nov. 10, 1867 in Appanoose County, Iowa, and was 84 years, 6 months and 16 days of age at the time of her passing. She came to Galena, Kan., in 1881 and to Neodesha in 1886.

She married here on Oct. 5, 1888 to James Hugh Monroe, who passed away Feb. 12, 1912. Mrs. Monroe owned and operated the Monroe Rooming House for 33 years. She was a member of the First Church of God.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. A. Lockard and Mrs. Wm. M. Garriott, both of Neodesha; three sisters, Mrs. S. B. Ralston, Guthrie, Okla., Mrs. Etta Norton, Ardmore, Okla. and Mrs. R. L. Billingslee, Marietta, Okla.; six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. One sister and four brothers preceded her in death.

Note: When I was at my great grandmother's boarding house she told me that she came to Kansas in a covered wagon from Iowa. I think she said it took six months. My aunt Shirley said that on the wagon trip a winter storm hit and they had to bring the horse into the tent with them to keep it from freezing. By Kerry Elkins

Mary Jane Stansbury came to Neodesha as a 13 year old girl with her father and her brothers and sisters in a covered wagon from Iowa. She married James Hugh Monroe and they lived near town on a farm. Hugh Monroe died from cancer of the throat. Mary Jane Monroe owned and operated the Monroe House at 603 Wisconsin. She rented rooms and cooked for the men staying there until her death in 1952. They had two daughters, Ocean Lee and Helen Neola. They later moved into town.

"Lee" taught school in the Baumgardner School north of town. She married James M. Williams and they had one child, James M. "Jimmie" Williams. After her husband died, she married Harold Lockard. Lee worked for some time for Albert Poznik, a well-known attorney in Neodesha and southeast Kansas.

Helen married Esley E. Elkins, son of William and Luella C. Elkins. They had one son, Esley E. Elkins, Jr.
