James parents were James Davidson and Sarah Elen Hillard. He had two brothers, Harry {1884-1900} and Daniel Ross {1887-1962}. In 1908 he married Hermie Folsom Thornburg and they had nine children; Sara Ellen{1909-1909}, Grace Louise Wolf{1910-1998}, Clair Wilson{1912-2000}, John Kaylor{1914-1998}, Nevada Hermie Ewing{1916-2012}, Frances Louella Johnston{1919-2008}, Virginia Mae Moorhead{1921-2008}, James Hillard{1923-2012}, and Marybelle Armstrong{1925-2010}.

According to Social Security records and his WWII Draft card, James was born in 1884.
