John R. Cunningham was among those captured at Mansfield, Louisiana, on April 8,1864. He was a prisoner of war at Camp Groce, near Hempstead, Waller Co. Texas until he was paroled on Dec. 5, 1864. On Dec. 12th, he was delivered to a steamer in the Gulf of Mexico off Galveston,Texas. John died on passage from Galveston to New Orleans on Dec.13, 1864, from exposures suffered while in Camp Groce, Texas.
