The son of Lewis/Ludwig & Lydia (Ziegler) Porr, he married Ann Eliza Graff and fathered George Henry (b. @1856), Ida L. (b. 1859), Alfred Louis (b. 03/04/66), William C. (b. 11/02/67), and Irvin Milton (b. 04/06/71). In 1860, he was a stone cutter living in Bernville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of twenty-eight in Berks County September 25, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 1 as a private with Co. G, 151st Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
