A guardian was appointed for Thomas Spafford on 3 December 1761 (Spofford Genealogy, p. 50). Compiler's comment: This source says, the guardian was appointed presumably at Sunderland, Hampshire County, Massachusetts where his younger siblings were born in 1753 and 1755. This presumption is probably not so, since the vital records of Pepperell, Massachusetts show the younger siblings born at Pepperell; in fact Thomas was baptized there in 1747.

The Spofford genealogy carries this Thomas Spafford no further and does not show a marriage or children. However, circumstantial evidence points to he being the same as the Thomas Spafford of Williamsburg, Massachusetts. His younger brother Jonathan was of Buckland and Whatley of Hampshire County. Williamsburg, Buckland and Whatley are all in close proximity to each other in then Hampshire County.

Also, the children's names Anna, Silas and Levi seem to be carried from one generation to another.

The family of this Thomas Spafford has been submitted to the Mormon Ancestral File (AF). The submitter of the information is probably Dwight Prentice of Florida. The AF shows the seven children as being born in Oneida, New York. Since the children were in the Williamsburg vital records, this error casts a shadow on all the other Thomas Spafford data from this submitter.

The AF shows Thomas wife to be Lucy Bridgman and they married 13 July 1769 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. No record can be found of such a marriage.

The AF shows an eighth child, Lucy Spafford, born at Augusta, Oneida County in 1788. Augusta was not settled in 1788 and this eighth child is not supported in the U.S. Census schedules. Incidentally, this eighth child is alleged to be an ancestor of Dwight Prentice. When an attempt was made to contact Dwight Prentice for sources, he had unfortunately passed away; however, his widow supplied a Prentice family typescript that contained information identical to the AF.

This Prentice family typescript appears to have been taken from a genealogy written in the first quarter of the twentieth century. There are references to Great Grandfather Ichabod Prentice and Great Grandfather Thomas Spafford -- this seems to indicate the genealogy was generated by Anna Cate Prentice (b. 1853), Emily Jane Prentice (b. 1856) or Eugene Henry Prentice (b. 1859). There were no citations showing from where the information was gathered.
