Civic leader. A 1911 graduate of Trinity College (where he was an outstanding athlete), he took training as a machine gun officer in Georgia during World War I. He began his career as a clerk at the Travelers insurance company, which was founded by his grandfather, James G. Batterson. In 1916 he was named assistant secretary of the Travelers and spend the next two years working at the company's offices in Chicago and Detroit. In 1924 he helped found the Travelers Fire Insurance Co. He became involved in politics in 1927 when he was named a member of the state Republican State Central Committee and the following year was a delegate to the Republican National Convention. He resigned from his position with the Travelers when in 1928 he was elected mayor of Hartford. He was the city's first full-time chief executive. When Hartford's Reservoir No. 4 became the responsibility of the parks board and was transformed into a park during his tenure, it was named for the mayor. Batterson Park is the city's largest park. He was elected to a second term in 1930 and ran unsuccessfully six years later for the First District Congressional seat.
