Born 30 September 1885 on the family farm near LeRaysville, Jefferson County, New York. Died 29 July 1963, age 77, at home in Adams from complications of cancer; interred Adams Rural Cemetery, Adams, Jefferson County, New York. Grew up on the Bowman farm on Pleasant Street Road, about 1½ miles outside the Village of LeRaysville, Jefferson County, New York. After marriage spent about 1 year on the Frank Smith farm in that area, but on 1 December 1909 moved back to his parents' farm where he engaged in, primarily, potato farming. Was known locally as the "Potato King of Jefferson County," having about 120 of his 500-acre farm (a composite of 5 separate farms he inherited or otherwise acquired over the years in partnership with his son-in-law, Donald Dow Cool) planted in potatoes; and he was recognized throughout the area and state for his leadership cin horticultural science. In fact, in 1940, Earnest was presented the Master Farmer Award by New York State Governor Herbert Lehman during ceremonies at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Ernest Bowman was a member of the American Farm Bureau federation and the Jefferson County Extension Association, serving as the latter organization's President at one point.
