Leonard L. "Bud" Smith, 72, of Urbana, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, after a long illness in Community Hospital, Springfield, Ohio.
He was born Dec. 28, 1933, in Emmett, Idaho, the son of William H. Smith and Viola (King) Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy from Sept. 3, 1952-Aug. 15, 1956, on the U.S.S. Cassin Young DD793, as a Machinists Mate, 3rd Class in Newport, R.I.
Mr. Smith worked in assembly for 28 years at International Harvester.
He was a member of the Caroline Chapter 39 of Mechanicsburg, Ohio. A member of Elizabeth Hood 505 Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Patron, Past Master of Champaign Lodge 525 of F. &. A. M., Urbana, and other offices from 1983-1999.
He initiated the merger on March 6, 2002, between Elizabeth Hood Chapter 505, of Urbana, Ohio, and Caroline Chapter 39, of Mechanicsburg, Ohio.
He was also a member of the Champaign County Shrine Club.
He was on the Red Cross Board, and also a member of the Civil Defense. He was proud to be a Boy Scout Club Leader and a little league coach.
He is survived by a very special friend and companion of many years, Harriet Grunninger, of Urbana; his children, Darla (Ken) Evilsizor, Greg (Debbie) Smith, Scott Smith, Kevin Smith, Paula (Paul) Clarke, Lorena (Brian) Williams, Larry (Julia) Smith, Doug (Karen) Smith; 25 grandchildren, Allison (Ricky) Thomas, Ben (Carrie) Barney, Erica (Ernie) Virgili, Ian and Jamie Evilsizor, Deanna (Will) Farris, Samantha, Danny and Josh Smith, Amanda Kaufman, Britany and Joey Smith, Jan and Cassy Namowicz, Sadie and Emily Waldo, Zoe Clark, Katelyn Williams, Chase and Matt Tanner, Jenell Wolfe, April Massie, Amanda, Cassy and Carmen Rolins; 15 great-grandchildren, Dyllan, Bradley and Jozie Thomas, Kaylin, Dustin, Austin and Catherine Barney, Carter and Corey Evilsizor, James and Amanda Loth, Tristian Wendell, Tallie Crabtree, Devon Massie and Elliana Virgili. He is also survived by his special and favorite cousin, John "Double" (Ella) Good.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Janice Allison; his parents , two sisters, Ida Mae Pulfrey, of Portland , Ore; and Delores Woolery, of Boise, Idaho.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, in the Vernon Funeral Home, Urbana. Masonic and Eastern Star services will be at 8 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, in the funeral home with the Rev. Kenneth Noonan officiating. Burial will follow in Kingscreek Cemetery.
