Mr. Gardner was born to Maynard and Mary D. Bates Gardner. On January 6, 1961, he married Mary Alice Brown and she survives. Also surviving are a son, Donald Jr., a daughter, Tammy, a step-son Roger Brown, five sisters, Ruth Smith, Dottie Guthrie, Vera Brown, Katherine Barlow and Edith Lintz. One daughter preceded him in death. He was a truck driver for Western Materials Company of Orleans and a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses.
