Darrell graduated from Woodburn High School in 1951. Following graduation, he worked on the railroad for a few months, then went to Des Moines to work. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952 and was sent to California for boot camp training. After boot camp, he came back home and married Thelma Ritter on Aug. 14, 1952. They lived in Hartford, Conn. while Darrell went to radio school at the New London base. After that he was stationed in Charleston,SouthCarolina; Homestead, and St. Petersburg, Florida; and Portland, Maine.
After being discharged from the service, the Davis' moved back to Iowa. Darrell worked at the Skelly Gas Station for several months. They then moved 3 miles south of Woodburn on the Delmar Bryant farm, which they rented and Darrell farmed with his dad. They lived there from October, 1956, until after Darrell's death, when Thelma moved to Osceola.
Darrell enjoyed playing sports in high school and later with the Woodburn mens' softball team. He was an Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Royals fan. He and Thelma also enjoyed watching movies together.
