!BIOGRAPHY: California and Californians Vol.3, pg 468 publ. 1930 by Rockwell Hunt
"George E. Bettinger, principal of the Alhambra High School, is one of the successful and popular figures in the public school service in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, and his record of success is the more gratifying to note by reason of the fact that he is a native son of Los Angeles, where his birth
occurred July 1, 1893.
Mr. Bettinger is a son of Marcus Clark Bettinger and Laura Angie (Hollingsworth) Bettinger, who still maintain their home in Los Angeles and who
are individually represented in a review appearing on other pages of this publication, so that further data concerning them and the family history are not here demanded.
In Los Angeles the public school discipline of George E. Bettinger culminated in his completion of a course in the Polytechnic High School, in which he was
graduated as a member of the class of 1910. During the period of 1911-15 he continued his studies in the University of Southern California, and in the
latter year he received therefrom the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In June, 1928, he received from this institution the supplemental degree of Master of
Arts.
Mr. Bettinger has been continuously engaged in teaching in the high school at Alhambra since 1916, was made its vice principal in 1918, and since 1925 he has held the executive and scholastic office of principal. His service here has been marked by characteristic loyalty and efficiency, and in its constructive application has done much to maintain the high standard set for the work in all departments. He takes lively interest in the athletic affairs of his high school, and in this connection it may be noted that as a student in the University of Southern California he won his letter in his participation in
athletic track events and that from the university he holds a life pass for admission to all its athletic exhibitions.
The political allegiance of Mr. Bettinger is given to the Republican party, he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian Church in their home community, he
is a director of the local Kiwanis Club, is affiliated with the Phi Kappa Psi and the Phi Delta Kappa college fraternities, and is a member of Lodge No.
1328, PBOE, Alhambra.
December 22, 1914, recorded the marriage of Mr. Bettinger and Miss May E. Gallup, who likewise was born and reared in Los Angeles and who was there
graduated in the Polytechnic High School as a member of the class of 1911.
Mrs. Bettinger is affiliated with the PEO Sisterhood and has membership in the Woman's Club of Alhambra. Mr. and Mrs. Bettinger have two children: George Clark and Mary Elizabeth."

G. E. BETTINGER
G. E. Bettinger, superintendent of Schools of Alhambra since 1934 comes by his calling naturally, as he was the son of Marcus Clark Bettinger, who was
connected with the Los Angeles public schools for thirty-four years--from 1885 until 1919--the last sixteen years of which time he served as assistant
superintendent of the entire Los Angeles system.
The subject of this sketch was born in Los Angeles on July 1, 1893, and after completing his grammar school education he entered Los Angeles
Polytechnic High School, where he graduated in 1911 and then went to the Univ. of So Calif, receiving his A. B. degree in 1915. In 1928 he completed the
requirements for his Master's degree. His school work began in Alhambra as a teacher of Spanish in the high school here. In 1918 he was made vice principal
of the high school and in 1925 was promoted to principal. For the past two years (1934-1936) he has served as superintendent of all city schools.
Under Mr. Bettinger's care are forty-four hundred elementary students and thirty-three hundred high school students. The total number of teachers in the
Alhambra system aggregates two hundred and sixty. The phenomenal growth which Alhambra has enjoyed in the past decade is very commonly attributed to the
splendid schools and Mr. Bettinger has taken the principal part in putting the schools here on a plane equal to if not superior to those of any other
community surrounding Los Angeles.
He is a member of the Kiwanis CLub and his college fraternity was Phi CKappa Psi and he belonged to the scholarship order of Phi Beta Kappa. He was
married to the former May Gallup, also a native of Los Angeles, and they have two children, George C. and Mary Elizabeth Bettinger.
