John, with brothers Andrew and Hugh, were veterans of the 4th Iowa Cavalry. John was a resident of Bradford when he enlisted as a Private on 23 Dec 1863 at the age of 28. He mustered in Co H 4th Iowa Cavalry the same day as his enlistment. Mustered out with his company on 8 Aug 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia. John's brother, Andrew, was wounded in action on 11 Jun 1864, and died of his wounds 13 Jun 1864 at Ripley, Mississippi.
John married Margaret Tanahill on 5 Dec 1866, Chickasaw County, Iowa, and to this union three children were born: Andrew, Ethel (who died in childhood), and Edith (Cagley). Margaret died in 1893.
John followed the trade of a carpenter nearly all his life. He was an active member of Geo. W. Dodge Post #132 G.A.R.
John Laird died at his home due to a stroke at the age of 69 years, 11 months, and 6 days.
