H.A., First Class, Company 57, United States Navy. Son of Frank S and Lydia B Marshall; born October 3, 1898, at Milton, IA. Entered service July 10, 1917, at Norfolk, VA; to US Naval Hospital; Hospital Nurse, First Class, March 1, 1918; transfered to US Naval Contagious Camp, April 3, 1918, at Portsmouth, VA; died at US Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, VA, October 6, 1918, age 20 years, 3 days; in service 446 days. His body now rests in Abingdon Cemetery, the first soldier of the Great War; buried October 14, 1918. Abingdon High School graduate in class of 1917; highly intellectual, and well known in surrounding towns as an athelete; pronounced by his coach as the individual star of the 5th Naval Base team, all of whom were former State University stars; was popular, brave, quick in decision, and of strong personality; hundreds of acquaintances and friends. Fought trying to save others until he himself was stricken.
