John L. Ballentine's occupation was that of a Blacksmith. In his day there was plenty of work available shoeing horses and repairing carrieges. But his pre-occupation was that of a street preacher. On Friday evenings he would often take his children with him into the city and stand on the corner and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. He preached on the street corners in both Chester, PA and Philadelphia, PA.

To save on trolley fair he would often walk barefoot with his shoes tied together and hung around his neck so he wouldn't wear out his shoe leather.

John had four daughters and one son: May (Mazie), Sara Jean, Margaret Ballentine Johnson, Frances Ballentine Bohrer and John L.

The John L. Jr. buried here is his grandson.

Died at age 50.
