Anna Gehrig was born in Madison County, Illinois in 1862. She married Mr. Adam Gehrig and the couple born one son, Richard A. Gehrig. The family moved to Chariton County around 1887, where they were pioneers in the town of Mendon. After moving to Mendon, they took in a foster son, Elmer Bills, and would raise him into adulthood. After a short period of farming, the couple moved to town where Anna was a milliner and seamstress. In 1915, the family moved to Salisbury where they were affiliated with the Brummell Drug Company. In 1924, they purchased the Lyric Theatre, which would become a lifelong business for their foster son, Elmer Bills.
