ALLIANCE - Ruby D. Smith, 83, of Alliance, NE died Friday, July 5, 2002 at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born August 9, 1918 in Alliance to Daniel and Edith (Sisley) Colerick. She came from a widely publicized family. Three brothers and one cousin Colerick had married 4 sisters Sisley. One brother Sisley had married a Colerick niece. After a time, the boy's father and the girl's mother died. The Colerick mother would later marry the Sisley father. Within two hours after the Alliance Times-Herald ran a large display regarding this union of the two families, the news was picked up by nearly every major newspaper in the nation. The Times-Herald called them, two of the most wedded families in the world. Ruby was proud to say that she spent her childhood in various places; having lived in a sheep wagon, a log cabin, a sod house, and above a fire station. She married Marion Smith on October 10, 1938. They lived most of their years in Alliance. She worked in the doctor's clinic and the hospital. After her retirement, she kept herself busy by assisting elderly persons with their Medicare problems. She was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Alliance and the Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Mary Smith of Hastings and Ron and Sharon Smith of Grand Island, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, two sisters and a brother-in-law, Erma Hawley of Alliance and Alta and Gene Holthus of Cheyenne, Wyo.; loving nieces and nephews and was "Grandma" to the Steve and Reyna Burger family in Alliance. She leaves many friends and relatives to celebrate her life. Her parents and husband preceded her in death. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 12, at the United Methodist Church in Alliance. The Rev. Mark Schutt and Rev. Dan Floyd officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.
