AVA -- Ernest James Downen, 87, of Ava died at 12:55 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville.
He was born on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 1915, in Degognia Township to James Downen and Anna Saul. He married Erma O'Daniel on June 6, 1942, at Ava and she passed away on Sept. 2, 1963. He married Stella Todd Schwartzkopf on Aug. 17, 1978, at Chester. She survives of Ava.
He is also survived by a son, James E. Downen of Ava; a daughter, Patricia Kuhnert of Ava; six step children, Helen Martin of Marina, Phyllis Cupp of Marina, Larry Schwartzkopf of Moore, Okla., John Schwartzkopf of Marina, Paul Schwartzkopf of St. Cloud, Fla., and Samuel Schwartzkopf of Red Bud; two grandsons, Shannon and Christopher Downen; 16 step grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Ruth Downen; and one brother, William Downen.
He was a retired therapist aid from Chester Mental Health.
He was a member of Alma Lodge No. 497 A.M. & A.M of Steeleville, Eagles Lodge No. 3552 of Chester, and Eastern Star, Murphysboro.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Cecil Dunning officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava. Masonic services will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Glenn Cemetery in Jacob or Hospice of Southern Illinois.
