Walter Scott Deppel, nicknamed Dusty, passed away on November 9, 2011 at home from natural causes.

Walt was born on July 25, 1936 to John and Lillian Deppel in Helena, Montana, joining his brother, Jack, and sister, Mary Jane. He attended school in Butte, MT, receiving a diploma in 1952.

He served our country by joining the United States Air Force in 1955. He married the love of his life, Lillian, on August 5, 1956 and has missed her immensely since she passed away a year ago. They had three children, Daniel, Tamilynn and Barbara.

In 1966, they bought their first home together on Apple Street in Boise and have lived there ever since.

After Walt was discharged from the Air Force he worked for many years at the Triangle Dairy. He drove the little milk truck delivering milk bottles to homes in Boise. He loved that job but had to quit because his elbows gave out.

In 1975, he attended Boise State University and accomplished his goal by earning his GED. He drove school bus for several years for the Boise School District and loved getting to know the students on the bus routes. He also delivered papers and drove to McCall every week for several years delivering the Thrifty Nickel and Auto Shopper papers.

He had always dreamed of owning a boat; after he retired he was finally able to fulfill his desire and became a proud boat owner. One of Tami’s fondest memories was when she went with him and her family out on Lake Cascade cruising around the lake admiring all of the beautiful scenery of the mountains and trees. He truly was very proud of his boat and enjoyed taking it out on the picturesque Idaho lakes and spending time with his family.

He also enjoyed looking at antique cars and loved going to the Emmett Cherry Festival to watch the parade and see all the classic cars driving by; he could tell you what the make, model, and year was for every car as it passed by.

A special memory Tami had growing up were the times when her Dad would give each one of them some money and take them Christmas shopping, taking them to all of the different department stores so that they were able to pick out gifts to give to each other and their parents at Christmas time.

Through the years, Walt would always talk about the different things he did to help his children. One story that he enjoyed talking about was when he helped his son Dan buy his first car, a 1956 Willy’s Jeep. One of his favorite sayings that he had learned from his father was that two heads were better than one; when you needed to do something it’s better to talk about it with someone else, so when it came the time for Dan to buy his first car, he enjoyed helping him do that.

Later on in life, Walt enjoyed watching movies on television, especially John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies, recently though, he stayed up most of the night watching “Mamma Mia” over and over again, he thought that was a really cute show.

He also had a love for cats, especially, Snowflake, who he has greatly missed and has now been reunited with along with his wife, Lil.

Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian; his parents; and his brother, Jack.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Scully, of Titusville, FL; son, Daniel (Mary) Deppel, of Emmett, ID; his daughters: Tamilynn (Douglas) Garlock, of Caldwell, ID, and Barbara (Cliff) Rediker, of Buhl, ID; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Cloverdale Funeral Home, 1200 N. Cloverdale Rd. Boise.

A graveside service will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 18, 2011 at Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens 4225 E. Fairview Ave. Meridian.
