James Wells Sherman was a sawyer and lumber agent. He had a mill just behind the house where the family lived in South Dayton, New York. On a buying trip for the mill in Duluth, Minnesota, James discovered that there was relief for his asthma, in the densely forested northern woods. He moved his family to a region north of Duluth, in 1892. A fire destroyed the home while James was away on the evening of July 4, 1894, killing the eldest son, Charley. The family lived in a hotel while a new home was built, settling in Angora, Minnesota, at a crossroads which became known as Sherman's Corner. Later, James, and his wife, lived in Duluth, near Lester Park, with a view of Lake Superior, where James would live out his life. After James died, his wife returned to Angora, where she remained until she also died.
