America was one of 8 known children of James Harvey and Sanla Siscel Hix/Hicks.

She married Joseph Henry Mosby on December 3, 1874 in Anderson Township, Perry County, Indiana. From August 17, 1897 through December 13, 1909, Joseph and America ran a post office at their home. The mailing address was Mosby, Indiana. America was the first female postmaster in Indiana. By January 1920, they had moved to Eldorado, Saline County, Illinois.

America and Joseph had 16 known children, 5 of which died young,(they all have memorial pages and are buried at Avery Cemetery). All of their children were born in Perry County, Indiana.
