Emily arrived in Galesburg, IL in 1856 in the company of a close relative and that relative's husband to assist them in a business opportunity that the husband had. When she arrived in Galesburg, Emily had an aunt living in Knoxville, Knox, IL which is not far.

A seventh descendant of John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, Emily conceived her third son when her husband was home on leave in Mar 1864. Emily had gone to NY sometime after Ben left for the Army. Letters place both Ben and Emily as being in Windsor, NY during Feb-Mar of 1864 when Benjamin was there with her during his veterans leave. She gave birth to her third son, Benjamin Sherman in Kirkwood, Broome, NY in Dec 1864.

Emily stayed on in NY until Mar 1866 when she returned to Abingdon. In addition to having Benjamin's parents and siblings in Abingdon, she had an uncle one county to the north, a sister several counties to the east, a nephew who was within a few miles of Abingdon and four first cousins, the fifth having died while a member Co D, 7th IL Cavalry.
