Dora Langdon Revis died Saturday, November 5th at the Manchester Memorial Hospital. She was 97 years old. Dora was born on August 20, 1914 in Marcum, Kentucky. She was the youngest daughter and the last surviving child of Alfred and Kizzie (Napier) Langdon. Dora was the granddaughter of Sim and Mary Ellen (Feltner) Langdon and John Hampton "Hamp" and Nancy (Mattingly) Napier. She grew up on the Langdon family farm in Clay County with 11 siblings, of whom have preceded her in death.
On December 15, 1930, she married George Washington Revis, a traveling schoolteacher and farmer. She and George lived on the farmland that Dora inherited and she and George purchased from the Langdon family in Clay County. They had three Children, Nancy Nell Revis Smith of Louisville; Geneva June Revis White, deceased, Manchester; and Edgar (Ed) of Clermont, Florida. George, a union pipe fitter, traveled the United States while Dora managed the family farm. When Dora's mother had a stroke, Dora nursed her privately at home for four years until her death.
Dora was active throughout her life in her local church, the Flat Creek Church of the Brethren. She was an accomplished quilter, a great cook and a warm hostess. She supervised the school cafeteria at Big Creek Elementary for several years. Many a person would walk up the road to the Revis' household, ostensibly to visit just minutes before dinnertime and Dora would welcome them to the table. No one was ever turned away hungry.
On December 23, 1984, George passed away in Tennessee following a heart attack and a history of heart problems. Dora continued to manage the family farm competently and single handedly and ensured that the Langdon Family Cemetery, where so many loved ones are buried, was well cared for. She later married Cecil Smith, a World War II Veteran and survivor of the D-Day Invasion in France. Cecil died on April 30, 2010 following a heroic bout with cancer.
Dora had two son-in-laws, Herbert (Nancy) Smith and Pearl, "Jaybird", deceased (Geneva) White, and one daughter-in-law, Carol (Ed) Rogers Revis. She also had seven grandchildren, Eddie Alfred Smith and Patricia Smith Terrell (Nancy's children); Dinah White Sowders and George Wayne White (Geneva's children); and Steven Revis, Robin Revis Pyke, and Jeffrey Revis (Ed's children).
In addition, she had 14 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren that live in Alabama, Florida and Kentucky.
Dora will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, sense of humor, courage, competency and strong will to remain independent until her death. But most of all she will be remembered for the love she showered on her family and her faith in Our Lord that enabled her to survive the deaths of her two beloved husbands and her youngest daughter. Her life is an example for us all. She will not be forgotten. As long as any of her descendents live, so shall she. Rest in peace, Mommy and Grandmama.
Funeral services for Dora Revis were held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Britton Funeral Home Chapel with Dwayne Yost & Dave Balmer officiating. Burial followed at the Langdon Cemetery at Marcum.
