LONG ILLNESS FATAL TO MRS. JOHNSON

Mrs. ANNA MORTENSEN JOHNSON, 81, wife of John C. Johnson, Sr., died at her home here about ten o'clock Sunday evening from anemia and ailments incident to her age. She had been ill since April and especially had for the past two months.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Trelberg, Sweden, August 21, 1851, a daughter of Niels Morten Olsen and Kisty Pehrson Mortensen, and lived there until March, 1866 when the family sailed for America after becoming converts to the L.D.S. Church. They crossed the ocean on the sail ship Humboldt which was condemned and which sank on its return voyage to Europe.

They crossed the plains by ox team and arrived in Salt Lake in September, 1866, and then came on to Ephraim shortly after. Here the immigrant girl met Mr. Johnson and they were married in the Salt Lake Endowment House in 1870 and have made their home here ever since. Nine children were born to the union, seven of whom survive. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Relief Society and was devoted to her home and children.

She is survived by her husband, who is an Indian War Veteran and the second oldest man in Ephraim, and by the following sons and duaghters; Mrs. Parley Hansen, Mrs. James Bailey, Mrs. Andrew Armstrong, John C. Johnson, Jr., and Emroy Johnson, Ephraim; Mrs. A.C. Nelsen and Mrs. E.A. Child, Salt Lake; by a brother Andrew Mortenson, Ephraim; by 31 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. All the children were present when death came.

Funeral services under direction of the Olsen Mortuary were held in the West Ward Chapel Wednesday with Ruel E. Christensen presiding. The invocation was offered by E.J. Mortensen and the benediction prounounced by Andrew Christensen. The choir was directed by Mrs. P.C. Peterson with ELda Mortenson as accompanist. Special musical numberw wer a violin solo, "The Old Refrain,: by Roger Rasmuson accompanied by Mrs. Phyllis Armstrong and a quartett number, "Going Home," by Evan Anderson, Lyle Peterson, Drews Anderson and Marlin Nielson, accompanied by Mrs. P.C. Peterson.

Alma Nielson, E.A. Child of Salt Lake, and Reuel Christensen all spoke highly of Mrs. Johnson, her life and her family, and told of her love for her children and grandchildren and her generous service to those in need.

Six grandsons acted as pallbearers, Clifton Baily, Virgil and Lester Hansen, Sidney Neslen, Ned Armstrong and Paul Johnson. The grave was dedicated by E.A. Child.

A large number of relatives and friends came from different sections of the state for the services.
