Gladys Emerson Archibald Mrs. Gladys Emerson Archibald, a resident of Memphis and former resident of Moscow, died Tuesday morning, August 3, 2004, at the Waverly Gardens Assisted Living Center in Memphis. She was 73 years of age and died following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted at 10 A.M. Friday, August 6th at the First Assembly of God Church in Collierville with her former pastor, Rev. William E. "Bill" Torkell of Fayette County, officiating. He was assisted by Rev. David Cross, pastor of the church. Interment was in the Friendship Cemetery on Highway 57 East near Moscow. Peebles Fayette County Funeral Home of Somerville was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Archibald was born May 3, 1931, in Maury City, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Thomas Roy Emerson and the late Florence Wyse Emerson. She was educated in the public schools of Maury City and continued her education at Lambuth College in Jackson. Mrs. Archibald was married April 20, 1951, to Bryan T. Archibald, a former Memphis business owner, who preceded her in death in December of 1995. Mr. and Mrs. Archibald were residents of Memphis for much of their life before moving to Fayette County. She served as a bookkeeper and co-owner with her husband of the Archibald Landing Gear Shoppe in Memphis for a number of years before their retirement. They enjoyed their farm in the Pleasant Grove Community near Moscow and Mrs. Archibald moved to the town of Moscow after the death of her husband. She was a member of the Collierville First Assembly of God Church at the time of her death and was a former member of the Moscow United Methodist Church where she served as Secretary in past years. Known for her independence and love of the rural way of life, Mrs. Archibald will be remembered as a person who enjoyed her family and friends in the Moscow area. Needlepoint and crocheting were favorite past times. Mrs. Archibald is survived by her daughter, Kim Fowler of Memphis; two sons, David B. Archibald of Collierville, Gregg A. Archibald of Richmond, Virginia; her sister, Lillian Dacus of Lakeland; her brother, William Emerson of Venice, Florida and four grandchildren. Casketbearers were Bryan Archibald, Brandon Archibald, Bill Cyko, Donnie Rogers, Tommy Harper and John Davis. The family request that memorials be directed to the American Hospice Foundation, 2121 L. St. N.W., Suite 200, Washington, DC 20037.
