Born in Evansville, IN, to William H. & Emily (Mills) Halbrooks, he grew up around greenhouses and Oak Hill Cemetery. He worked in Chicago before moving to Columbus, OH. He purchased the florist business from A.J. Baldwin in Newark on 1 Aug 1912. He would spend the next 17 years growing his business with the help of his wife, Della, son, Cooper, and son-in-law, Joseph Gould.
He died at age 51 of leukemia, leaving his third wife, Maud, a son and a daughter.
