Another role he held was that of editor of one of the first black owned and operated, weekly papers, 'The Houston Van.' Accordingly, he did not shy away from speaking the truth.
"The Houston Van is an authority on the Scriptures, and frequently resorts to the Holy Writ for the proof of his editiorial wisdom. Van H. McKinney is the 'think architect' of the paper, and he ventured last week to observe that "Gov J.S.Hogg talked longest and loudest against mob Violence, and did less to suppress it in Texas than any Governor Texas has ever had: While on the other hand, our present Governor Joseph D. Sayers, has said less and done more to put a stop to lynching than any other Governor Texas has ever had. "Rev Janie Gilbert, senior pastor of McKinney Memorial United Methodist Church in La Marque, is encouraging the community to join a celebration. "It's our 90th anniversary as a church, " she said, "We're calling it 'Aim for Certainty in Uncertain Times.'
The church is named for the REV. VAN H. MCKINNEY, who ministered from 1922 to 1925.
Note* The church is still going strong in 2013.
