TOWN'S OLDEST BUSINESSMAN, E. H. HUGILL, LAID TO REST The town's oldest business man, Edgar H. Hugill, died on Thursday at Alexandra Hospital. Mr. Hugill, a life long resident of this community was in his 96th year and was a man loved and respected by all who knew him. Mr. Hugill had been in failing health for only a week, and seriously ill since Sunday. He had lived at 186 Thames St. S. and was able to live alone until taken ill. For many years Mr. Hugill was a photographer, and many pictures taken by him, are among the prized possessions of our townsfolk. For the past 35 years he had been an insurance broker. A member of Trinity United Church, he served on the session of the church and for nearly 50 years, was recording secretary. He was a member of St. John's Lodge, No. 68, and was recording secretary of that lodge for a long period. Each summer Mr. Hugill spent at Port Keewaydin, in Muskoka and for 50 yeas he was the post master there for the summer. Through this, he had friends all over Ontario as well as his very wide circle of friends here. Despite his advanced years, he was very young in spirit and maintained a lively interest in his friends, his church and his community. Mr. Hugill is survived by one brother, Ronald Hugill, Mistic, Connecticut; two nephews, Stewart Walley, Ottawa, and Clarence Stevens, Burmis, Alberta; six nieces, Mrs. William Spear, Pottsville, Pennsylvania; Mrs. C. D. Moncrieff, Windsor; Mrs. A. T. Bell and Mrs. Andrew Stevens, Calgary; Miss Marion Robinson and Mrs. Estelle Ferguson, both of Ingersoll. The funeral service was held on Saturday afternoon at the Walker and Clifton Funeral Home, 88 King St. W., was largely attended by relatives and by friends, not only from the community, but from Toronto, Windsor and Detroit. The many floral tributes were further evidence of esteem. Rev. C. D. Daniel of Trinity United Church, conducted the service. Temporary entombment was made at the Ingersoll Mausoleum. St. John's Lodge, No. 68, held a service in the mausoleum, conducted by Worshipful Master, W. B. Ross and fellow officers, Rev. C. D. Daniel, chaplain; James W. Dean, secretary and Russell Stringer, Director of Ceremonies. The honorary pallbearers were fellow members of the session of Trinity United Church and Masonic brethren, H. T. Bowers, H. I. Stewart, W. W. Wilford, E. A. Webber, R. W. Green and Earl Fugard. The active bearers, who also carried the flowers were Charles Christie, Wilfred Allen, William Sutherland, Roy Marles, Charles Meatherall and George Beavis
