He was born in Taylor Township, Columbia County, Arkansas. The post office they used was at Sulphur Springs. About 1881 he shot and killed a man over a girl, at Mary's Creek Saloon in Parker County near the Tarrant County border in Fort Worth. His uncle Azariah Jessie Hood was the county judge of Parker and gave William some money, a horse and told him to change his surname from Vestal to Harrison. He fled to Oklahoma.
