Cornelia Ann G. Lofftus was born August 13, 1822 in Staunton, Virginia to James Lofftus and Mary (Hall) Atwell. She married William Henry Cocke of Virginia, son of Chastain Cock and Mary Brown of Virginia, on October 18, 1838 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. William went to California in 1850 for the gold rush and made enough to move the family by wagon train through Utah in 1852. They settled in Sanoma County California. They moved to Morro township, San Luis Obispo County, California. William Cocke also had a large cattle operation in Nevada where he died. Together, they had 11 children, 8 which were living in 1902. (James Miller Guinn, Historical and Biographical Record of Southern California, 1902, page 871) The names of 10 are known Hannah Cocke James Henry Cocke b.
