NAN DEAN AVERY PARKER
TALLADEGA – Funeral service for Nan Dean Avery Parker, 90, will be Saturday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m at First Baptist Church in Talladega. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery beside her husband.
Mrs. Parker died Oct. 20 after a five month stay at Ingram Manor of Beverly Health Care in Eden. She was born July 15, 1914, in the community of Eureka and she then lived in the Stemley Bridge area. She attended Talladega city schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1933. From there, she attended business college in New Orleans. Afterward she returned to the area and worked at Bemiston Bag Company. She is a descendant of the Coker, Beavers and Avery families of the Lincoln and Blue Eye communities. Mrs. Parker worked from 1951 to 1973 as secretary to the principal at the Alabama School for the Deaf. She has been an active member of First Baptist Church of Talladega for 58 years and loved her church and Lord Jesus. She has served in all areas of the church from nursery to adult teacher and she loved missions. She also loved doing ceramic crafts and needlework. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Raymond Parker on May 1 of this year; her parents, James Wistar and Myrtle Coker Avery; her sisters, Margaret Avery Williams and Jacquelyn Avery Stephens; and brother, James Wistar Avery Jr.
She is survived by four children, Pamela Hasty of Asheville, N.C., Celeste Hamaker of Richardson, Texas, Tommy Parker Jr. of Talladega and Dean Parker of Mobile; sister, Jeanette Avery White of Talladega; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Pallbearers will be Kent Hamaker, Parker Hamaker, Blake Hamaker, Avery Hasty, Tommy Parker III and Leigh Latta.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Lela Locklin Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 919 N. Michigan Avenue, Suite 1000, Chicago, Ill., 60611-1676, to the ministries of First Baptist Church, Talladega or to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions at First Baptist Church, Talladega.
Usrey Funeral Home in Talladega will direct the service.
