From kpet (#47128976)

E. Wright Allen was on the point of leaving LaFayette, Ind. yesterday afternoon to visit his sister, Mrs. Lou Allen Gregory, when he was informed of her death. Mrs. Gregory had been for some time in a sanitarium in LaFayette undergoing treatment and her condition was known to be serious.

Mrs. Gregory was known to a host of friend in Macon county and she was the founder of the domestic science course in the University of Illinois, where she taught several years before becoming the wife of the late President John M. Gregory.

Born in Scott county, Kentucky, the daughter of David Skillman Allen, Mrs. Gregory came to Harristown when a small child and received her education in the country school and Decatur high school of which she was one of the early graduates.

After studying in the east and Normal University, she held teaching positions in Peoria and Alton before being called to the University of Illinois, then in its infancy. She was married to Dr. Gregory, then a teacher, in 1879 and continued teaching after her marriage. Her work, which was of a pioneer order, attracted wide attention.
She leaves besides her brother, E. Wright Allen, a daughter, Ailene Gregory, professor of English at the University of Illinois.

Mr. Allen went to Urbana yesterday to assist in making arrangements for the funeral, the time of which will be announced later.
