Alva was the son of William F. "Frank" and Mary Mercer Cook from Ohio and was christened on 25 March 1902 in Jackson Township. He had an eighth grade education and owned a cement block making business. Alva married Martha Spaulding on 31 May 1924 in Adrian, Michigan , and they had Phyliss, Jack, Ronald, Joyce, Roger, Sue, and James. Alva died from a coronary thrombosis at the age of 57 years 6 months and 1 day.
