Walter was a carpenter and builder in Buckland, MA where he started in business with his father. He established the first Manual Training courses in the Buckland-Shelburne schools in 1919 and taught them. He was a selectman of Buckland from 1918 through 1935 and one of the sponsoring committee for compiling and publishing the History of Buckland in 1937. On Apr 3, 1911 he married Nellie "Ethel" O'Hearne in Shelburne Falls MA. They had two children "Peg" Evelyn Bertha Stanford (1912-1989)and "Pete" Nelson Wood Stanford (1917- 2003).
