Mrs. BURTON R. CROSS
Mrs. Ella May Cross, 72, widow of Burton R. Cross, of Maple Hill Road, Shaftsbury, died unexpecedly Wednesday a her home.
State Police report that Mrs. Cross was found by her grandson, Edward A. Cross, 17, who made his home there. Dr. Arthur S. Faris, regional medical examiner, pronounced death due to natural causes. Acting Stete's Attorney John Gramhofer gave permission for removal of the body.
Mrs. Cross was born in Bennington Sept 6, 1899, daughter of Lewis and May (Van Kleeck) Potter. Her education was received in area schools and she was a 1917 graduate of Bennington High School.
Before her marriage to Mr. Cross, she had taugh at the East Road school in Shaftsbury. Mr. and Mrs. Cross have lived in Shaftsbury all their married life and had for a time worked for Lady Gosford at Topping Tavern.
They had for many years operated a farm in this area and were held in high respect by many. Mr. Cross died May 21, 1967.
Mrs. Cross was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Shaftsbury and also belonged to Shaftsbury Taconic Grange.
Survivors are three sons, Harold Cross of Bennington; Edward B. and Robert, both of Shaftsbury; one daughter, Mrs. Roger (Lillian) Wood of Arlington; three brothers, Martin Potter of West Peabody, Mass; Lyman and Burton, both of Bennington; three sisters, Mrs. Earl (Bessie) Cross, Mrs. Lloyd (Marion) Mattison and Mrs. Stanley (Lillian) Browe, all of Shaftsbury; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
The family will be in attendance at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A Grange service will be at 8 tonight at the funeral home.
The funeral will be at the funeral home at 1 pm Friday with her pastor, the Rev. A.J. MacDonald, officiating. Burial in the spring will be in the family plot in Shaftsbury. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Cancer Fund if friends desire, through the funeral home.
