George M. Slater,Lifelong Quincy Resident, Is Dead
George M. Slater, 72 of 1602 Locust died Friday afternoon at 4:33 in the Blessing Hospital emergency room after being stricken with a heart attack at his home. The first Gardner Denver Company employ to complete 50 years with the company. Mr. Slater retired in 1952 after 52 years on the job. He and his wife also operated the G.& L. Floral Shop at 16th and Locust from 1926 through 1947. Mr. Slater began work with the old Gardner Governor works when he was 14 and was with the company continuously more than half a century. He was honored at a special dinner upon the completion of 50 years with the company. He was foreman of the company paint department for many years. At the time of his retirement, five of his sons-in-laws were also employed by Gardner Denver.
A son of William and Nancy Hanger Slater, he was born August 25, 1885 in Quincy and lived here all his life. He was married July 30, 1902 in Hannibal, Missouri to Lillian Mary Elizabeth Niehaus, who survives. Other Survivors include a son William Slater of Quincy, six daughters, Mrs Katherine Griffin, Mrs Charles Hertzler, Mrs.Elmer Gower, Mrs. Ben Donhardt, Mrs Kenneth Lakey of Quincy, and Mrs. Richard Gaines of Burlington, Iowa; 15 grand children and seven great grandsons. He was preceded in death by a son and granddaughter.
