--------------------------------------------

Miss Estella Rosalia Mack was born in Pennsylvania, on 10 May 1847. Her parents were William Orlando and Louisa [Graham] Mack. They were married in Brownsville, Fayette, Pennsylvania, on 06 July 1845. In the early Spring, 1852, the family packed a wagon with what they needed and set a westward coarse towards a new life in the Oregon Territory. They were drawn by what they had heard and read of wonderful farm land free for the taking, in the Willamette Valley. The U. S. Congress and the President had made laws that give up to 640 acres to any American family willing to stay and farm in Oregon [A single man only received half that amount of farm land]. In November 1853, the Mack family reached Oregon City and started immediately looking around for a place not already taken by those that arrived ahead of them. At Oregon City's, U. S. Land Office, Estella's parents secured their, Oregon Donation Land Claim, No. 1170, on 03 December 1852. To fulfill the contract they had to build, live and work on their farm continuously for a period of time. Much of this land was full of big trees that had to be cleared. Then the land would be made theirs to do with as they wanted. These ODLC's were later broken up and sold as smaller farms. The money made from these sales helped these families build solid futures in Oregon.
