Joan passed away on Sunday, November 06, 2011 at her residence in Ladonia. Joan Garner Thomas was born on Nov. 10, 1932 in Gober. She is a twin of Frances Roosevelt Shive Guerrero. Her parents were Vernon C. Shive and Mary Melvine Nix Shive. Joan received Christ as her savior on August 10, 1948 and was baptized at the First Christian Church in Bonham. Joan grew up in Gober and graduated from Gober Independent School in May 1950. Joan entered college at Commerce, and graduated in May of 1953 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education, where the college was under the name East Texas State Teachers College. After graduation Joan was ready to make all her dreams come true. She had always wanted to be a teacher. As the summer moved on, Don Weeks, her longtime friend and sweet heart asked her to marry him. He was in the Air Force stationed in Mt. Home Idaho. On August the 8th, they were married and Joan had received her first job in Mt. Home Idaho. She taught first grade and loved it. Donnie received his honorable discharge in August 1954. Joan and Donnie moved back to Gober. Donnie entered college at East Texas State and Joan began teaching the 5th, 6th grades from 1954-55; 1956-57 in Gober.

The couple moved to Bonham in 1957. It was necessary for Don to work and Supreme Trailer had the job opening. Four children were born of this marriage. Richard Dwayne Weeks, Donetta Sue Powell, Wiley Anderson Weeks and Nicky Joe Weeks. Joan and Donnie were divorced in 1962. They had moved to Ft. Worth and Joan began teaching with the White Settlement Schools. As the children grew up, Joan's mother was a big help to her. She taught in White Settlement nine years and she and the children decided to move to Ladonia. It was hard in a large city to make it on a teacher's salary. Joan began teaching in Dodd City Schools and was employed with them 22 years. There she met and married Ralph Felix Thomas who at this time was Superintendent of the Dodd City Schools. Joan and Felix were married 17 years and were divorced in 1987. Felix left teaching and pursued other interests. Joan continued to teach and retired in 1989.

Upon retirement she continued her community service. Worked as a substitute teacher in Fannindel and managed the Senior Center in Ladonia and was a member of the First Christian Church in Ladonia.
